The smallest folding prams, and what they cost you

Popular prams ranked by folded volume, with what reviewers found you give up for a small fold.

Folded volume is the simplest way to compare how much boot a pram takes: length × width × height. By that measure, the five smallest prams we've checked all come in at 62 litres or less. The next smallest, the iCandy Peach 7, is about twice that, at 124 litres.

That gap is the whole story. Below it are compact strollers built to fold first. Above it are full-size prams that happen to fold well. Which side you want depends on what you're giving up, so here's what reviewers found the small folds cost.

What a small fold costs you

Smaller wheels. The same compact frame that makes the fold small makes the wheels small. Testers at MadeForMums found the Jet 5 jittery on cobbles and long grass, and Mumsnet says the Minu V3 is designed for pavements. The YOYO³ is the exception reviewers keep pointing to: MadeForMums found it smooth over cobbles and grass.

A trickier fold than you'd expect. Small doesn't always mean simple. Mother&Baby says the YOYO³ takes more than one simple step, and the Jet 5 folds itself but needs two hands to open, according to MadeForMums. The Aer² and Butterfly 2 get the best fold reviews: Mumsnet found the Aer² folds one-handed in about a second.

It folds in seconds with one swift movement.

Extras for a newborn. Most of these lie flat from birth, but not all out of the box. The YOYO³ needs its newborn pack, £195 according to MadeForMums, and the Aer² needs its £229 carrycot, per MadeForMums.

A smaller basket. The Minu V3 is the standout: Mumsnet puts it at 11.3 kg, MadeForMums at 9.1 kg. The Jet 5's basket has a bar across it that several testers found awkward.

The smallest full-size prams

If you want big wheels and a carrycot, the iCandy Peach 7 has one of the smaller folds among the full-size prams, at 124 litres. The trade-off is a two-part fold: the seat or carrycot comes off before the chassis folds, according to MadeForMums, and Expert Reviews lists it as bulky to get into the car. The Silver Cross Reef 2 folds with the seat on, but at 13.2 kg (29.1 lb) it's heavy to lift, and the Mumsnet tester found it took up a lot of a Kia Sportage boot.

Volume isn't the whole answer. A long, flat fold can lie across a wide boot that a shorter, taller fold won't fit under the parcel shelf. To see how a pram fits your car, pick both on the checker.
